    About Me

    About Me

    Dr. Linda Rozell-Shannon

Linda Rozell-Shannon, PhD is an interpretive, stylized, abstract, and simplistic artist who favors small scale paintings (no larger than 10” x 10”). Cubism is also incorporated into many of her paintings.

Born in Upstate New York, Dr. Linda (as she is referred) inherited her desire to draw from her mother, father, and several aunts and uncles. She sketched and doodled as a child, and took 4 years of art in high school. She began painting in her teen years but was unhappy with her “realism” style. She felt that it was not her voice as an artist. She earned her first college degree in art. She sketched here and there, but continued to struggle to find her voice as an artist. When her daughter was born in 1994 with a tumor called a “hemangioma” she put her art aside to establish what is today, the leading not for profit in the world for children and adults with a vascular birthmark: The Vascular Birthmarks Foundation.

In 2015, Dr. Linda picked up a paint brush for the first time in over 25 years. Longing to find her own voice and style, and inspired for over 30 years by the works of her favorite artist, Graciela Rodo Boulanger, she cultivated her own simplistic stylized abstract style, favoring small-scale paintings typically 5” x 7” or 6” x 6” with the largest being 10” x 10”. From 2015 until 2017, she completed over 60 small-scale paintings. Her style became cemented, with a leaning toward interpreting religious stories, happy life events, and transforming all of her subjects into child-like images. Within her first religious series, The Jesus Chronicles, she developed a technique of creating “halos” using a method that resembles tiling. She uses water-based oils and prefers full, bright, colors straight from the tube. She interprets photographs and historical images into her own unique style. Dr. Linda has done interpretation of famous religious paintings by Raphael and DaVinci.

Since 2015, Dr. Linda has done over a dozen commissioned paintings. These commissions have all been interpretations of photos given to her by customers seeking her stylized interpretation. Dr. Linda also includes an abstract form (circle, triangle, square, or rectangle) or any abstract shape/form into most of her pieces, as a nod to cubism. There is a child-like flair to her work. She also favors the works of Friedlander, Picasso, and VanGogh. Dr. Linda tells stories with her pieces, always longing to display love and affection, avoiding dark and unhappy events.

Within her first year of returning to art, she entered her very first art show and won her first ribbon (May of 2016).

Dr. Linda wants her artwork to tell a story and to put a smile on the face of everyone who views her work. She wants her work to depict connectivity between people, exhibiting love, affection and the simplicity of life.
